The College of Education is one of the most renowned colleges at Sangmyung University. Throughout Sangmyung¡¯s development, the College of Education has been a flagship of the institution. Much of Sangmyung¡¯s curriculum has been built around it.
With her eye firmly on the nation¡¯s future, Bae, Sang-Myung, founder of Sangmyung University, established the College of Education based on her philosophy of education. For the past 30 years, the College of Education has expanded and is today the most renowned college at the university.
The College of Education began with three departments: Home Economics, Fine Arts, and Physical Education. Since then, it has evolved with the times, adding the Department of Korean Language Education, and the Department of Foreign Language Education in December 1967. Shortly thereafter, it added the Departments of Music Education, Crafts, and Social Studies Education.
During this period, the Department of Foreign Language Education had three majors: English, Japanese, and French; Social Studies Education had two majors in Geography and History; and Science Education had three majors in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology; and Commerce Education was also established.
In October 1982, and in September 1983, the Sangmyung University underwent two major reorganization efforts from which emerged the Division of Education. By March 1987 the Division of Education became a college.
In 1999, the Department of Home Economics Education was reorganized and became the Division of Human Environmental Sciences, now attached to the College of Natural Sciences.
By 2004, the College of Education had over 240 students and comprised the Departments of Korean Language Education, English Language Education, French Language Education, Japanese Language Education and Mathematics Education.

The aim of the College of Education is to "educate capable individuals willing to contribute to the creation of culture and the betterment of mankind by embracing the virtues of truth, justice, and love." Part of this mandate entails training secondary school teachers in current skills applicable to today's information society. Some of these skills include:
1. Managing and developing secondary education programs
2. Mediating and forging links between affiliated educational institutions and schools
3. Promoting and participating in joint academic research with secondary school teachers

Department of Korean Language Education
The Department of Korean Language Education teaches basic to increasingly complex theories from all education-related fields, from Korean Language and Literature to Korean Language Educational Theories and Applications. In this manner, students gain not only the ability to understand, but to imagine and create as well. The Department qualifies students in Korean Language Education and also teaches them to be competent and creative professionals who will find work and success in the education field after graduation. The Department uses a variety of methods to instruct, such as: research activities ; academic workshops and research paper publication; creative activities ; presentation, performance, and language or literature nights; and field activities ; dialect investigation, fable collection, and academic field investigation. After graduation, students have gone on to serve as middle and high school teachers, professors, novelists, poets, critics, broadcasting writers, and reporters all over the world.
Department of English Language Education
As the international language, English is not only a means to employment, but it also allows for communication with people from around the world. Professional English teachers possessing both practical and theoretical knowledge of English help students improve on their fluency.
The Department of English Language Education aims not only to have students understand and use English effectively, but also to enhance students¡¯ ability to explore the essence of English literature and to analyze the language systematically. The Department provides the requisite education for becoming a scholar in English Education, Language, and Literature, and develops English teachers able to effectively impart their knowledge.
Department of French Language Education
By encouraging students¡¯ acquisition of broad knowledge in French Language Education, the French Language, and French Literature, the Department of French Language Education aims to cultivate French teachers for middle and high schools as well as specialists who can play pivotal, professional roles in various areas of French education. In French Literature, students examine literary trends and thoughts. In the study of the French Language, students separate modern French into its constituent aspects, analyzing its structure; emphasis is put on the ability to speak French fluently so that students can actively cope within the contemporary international environment. After graduation, students can continue to develop their academic competency by going to the Graduate School or they can advance into all French related milieux, as diplomats, members of the press, or broadcasting systems, or interpreters.
Department of Japanese Language Education
The Department of Japanese Language Education aims to cultivate excellent Japanese teachers for middle school and high schools.The first two years of the four-year course emphasize improving basic language skills for conversation, reading, and grammar; the last two years promote the acquisition of higher language skills while including essential study of Japanese politics, economy, society, culture, history, and literature. Importantly, students also learn educational theory. The Department creates professional personnel who can work wherever a competency in Japanese is required.
Department of Education
The Department of Education aims to cultivate teaching specialists who can serve as teachers for middle and high schools, or work in educational research institutes. The Department trains teachers who can succeed in any educational environment. By promoting technical development and exploration of educational phenomena, the Department develops programs to educate teachers, analyzes real problems in education, and explores alternative methods and solutions. After graduation, students obtain a Bachelor of Arts and the 2nd class License of Teacher Education with the further possibility of securing the 2nd class License of Lifetime Educator, pending completion of necessary credits. If students from other majors select this major, they may obtain the License of Teacher for their respective major.
Department of Mathematics Education
Mathematics has always had a great influence on human affairs. Social progress depends, to a large extent, on technological development, which, in turn, depends on developments in mathematics. In the Information Age, graduates in mathematics have a wide range of career opportunities.
